Addiction AVERT is a substance abuse craving reduction technique offered by Rational Reflections, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.

The method aims to assist individuals in challenging immediate cravings by presenting realistic scenarios regarding the potential outcomes of substance use, highlighting what may be at stake. It can be tailored to align with an individual's personal recovery plan and can be used in conjunction with a sponsor.

One of the key aspects targeted by Addiction AVERT is the mid-brain, which is identified as the primary area affected by addiction. This section of the brain, essential for survival instincts like food, sex, and responding to threats, is contrasted with the cerebral cortex, responsible for logical thinking, reasoning, and moral judgment.

In cases of addiction, the typical control exerted by the cerebral cortex over the mid-brain is disrupted. The mid-brain gains dominance, suppressing logical and moral faculties and facilitating continued harmful behaviors despite their consequences.

However, Addiction AVERT intervenes in this process by aiming to restore the cerebral cortex's control over the mid-brain. By helping individuals regain top-down regulation, this technique endeavors to enable rational thinking and promote abstinence among alcoholics and substance abusers.
